Richborough

A recent visit to Rutupae or Richborough Roman Remains in the winter 2012 (Jan 28) on a day that was cold and windy was a follow up to a visit the previous week to Reculver Towers.  Once, here in Richborough and at Reculver there was enough water to park ships and create a port. Today the river Stour runs past the remains at Richborough and through the town of Sandwich named as a Cinque Port and once a significant Kent port.  Likewise the Fort at Reculver was the northern port and fort on what was a wide channel now marked only by the narrow, wandering Wantsum river.  The towers were a later construction for an Abbey on the former Roman fort and a Saxon church. The remains of a Roman defensive wall can be seen on the inland side.  Some Roman material was used in the construction of the towers.

The walls shown in the video are all Roman and are a fine example of a how they built their forts and laid out their towns.  Richborough is well worth a visit not only on the building site but also for the contents of the museum. It is an English Heritage site.
